Alva (Ace) Smith

Alva (Ace) Smith retired from the Louisiana Department of Revenue in November of 2006 after 22 years. He served the Department as auditor, attorney, chief reviewer, Assistant Secretary, General Counsel, and spent one year on loan to the Governor’s Office as Coordinator of a major tax overhaul project for Governor Roemer. He drafted the Louisiana Corporation Income Tax Act, which passed in 1986 and remains the foundation on which the current corporate income tax system is based. He is a Board Certified Tax Law Specialist Certified by the Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization and a member of the Louisiana Society of CPAs.

Areas of Concentration

His practice lies primarily in the area of Louisiana state taxation and governmental relations. Smith offers his services as a consultant and expert witness in Louisiana taxation. He is available for consultation regarding any matter with the Louisiana Department of Revenue, including protest conferences with Field Audit Services, refund and rebate claims with Office Audit, and monitoring and attending rulemaking hearings. He can assist in obtaining Private Letter Rulings from the Policy Division and Informal Advice from the agency regarding proposed transactions.
